Drunken Monkey Jam – Breakfast Ideas with a Boozy Twist

I’ve made a lot of jams in my day, but none quite like this one. It’s cheeky, it’s fruity, and yes—it has rum. Drunken Monkey Jam is what happens when you take overripe bananas, sweet strawberries, peaches, and pineapple, and mix them with brown sugar and just enough dark rum to make brunch feel like a vacation. I was staring down a pile of bananas that had seen better days and thought, 'You’ve got one last shot at greatness.' And boy, did they show up. If you’ve ever spread your toast with something that made you smirk, this is that spread. It’s what happens when breakfast stops behaving and starts getting fun. Whether you're looking for new breakfast ideas, craving fun easy recipes, or just love peach jam with a twist, this is your jam—literally. It's part sweet, part sass, and all flavor. You can swirl it into yogurt, slather it on pancakes, or eat it by the spoonful while no one's looking. (No judgment.)

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped peaches
  • 1/2 cup crushed pineapple (drained)
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the bananas, strawberries, peaches, pineapple, brown sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring often so it doesn’t stick.
  3. Let it simmer for about 25–30 minutes, or until thickened to your liking. Keep stirring—it likes attention.
  4. Remove from heat, then stir in the rum.
  5. Let it cool before transferring to clean jars. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
